This day in travel history

On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California -- now known as HNL to OAK.  According to the book Amelia: The Centennial Biography of an Aviation Pioneer, it was such an uneventful flight, she was able to relax and listen to "the broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera from New York" towards the end of the flight.

Celebrate the anniversary of a relaxing flight by drinking an Aviation:

AVIATION
  • 2 oz. Aviation Gin
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 oz. Luxardo maraschino liqueur
  • 1/4 oz. creme de violette
Combine in shaker with small ice and agitate gently until the shaker is too cold to hold. Strain into an equally chilled cocktail glass, and nestle a home-made maraschino brandied cherry in the bottom of the glass, along with a drop or two of its juice.
